What Exactly is Acupuncture, and How Does It Work?

Acupuncture is a technique in which very thin needles of varying lengths are inserted through the skin. The basic premise is that qi flows through the human body, and any blockages in this qi or some people even call it chi flow will result in illnesses and poor health.

Acupuncture and Its Origin

First off, acupuncture is one of the most broadly used healing system in the universe. Acupuncture was introduced to and practiced in Korea and Japan as far as back in the pre-historic age. It was introduced in Europe by a Jesuit priest in the 17th century. Later, acupuncture was introduced into the United States as a direct result of President Nixon's visit to China in 1970.

Blockages along the meridians restrict the flow of chi through our bodies. This oriental therapy of physical and formless energy rebalancing act is achieved through pressure points and meridians “fine-tuning”. While needles are generally used, it is really possible to do acupuncture without needles.

Acupuncture and Its Needles…

Since the meridian points are minute, large needles cannot be used. Or else, it will not be precise, and it may hurt our body. Hence, very fine needles are used. They can be 1mm thick and are generally inserted to up to one-quarter of an inch into our skin. To increase the impact of the 10 minutes or more (up to 60 minutes, sometimes) treatment, electricity may also be used to make the needles vibrate and impact the meridian points. The key here is to remove the two blockages varieties – excess qi or not enough qi issues. It is important that the practitioners are familiar with the relevant meridian points for treatment because different meridian points need to be stimulated for different illnesses.

Does Acupuncture Treatment Give Good Results?

The lay person will think that acupuncture is painful. In fact, most people don’t feel a thing more than a tiny prick. When done right, you will even feel soothing. A good acupuncture treatment will normally have a few meridian points treated with anywhere from 2 to 20 needles at the same time. This has synergistic healing effect on the body.

Acupuncture and Its Premise

To highlight again, the imbalance or blockages of energy along out bodies’ meridian pathways result in various forms of diseases or illnesses, and needles are used to stimulate these points. But, what about facial and beauty issues? The fundamentals are the same – really small needles are used on the face to increase blood circulation and boost the secretion of collagen. It can also be used to affect blood flow to our spinal cords and brain. However, acupuncture is not an instant cure, and follow up treatments of 2 to 5 or even more times is required to have good results.

People Feel Worse After Acupuncture?

Here is an interesting thing about acupuncture. Many people report feeling worse after treatment. However, if they persist with the treatment, they actually recover from the health problems. This is quite a difference in the Chinese and Western views of healing diseases. The Western goes for fast, the Chinese goes for slow – but, cure the root of the problem.

While acupuncture is really good for pain relief, it is also very good in treating many ailments. Among them, arthritis, fertility, addictions, and much more. But remember, the very foundation of acupuncture is still the balancing of qi flow in our body.
