What then is Acupuncture?

The ancient Chinese believed that the human body is alive due to the flow of life energy or qi (or chi) in the body. There are certain so-called “traffic junction” or meridian points whereby these life energy congregates and then disperse throughout the body. If there is a “red-light” at these points, the energy or qi will be blocked at these points, and we will fall ill or come down with a disease. Hence, fine acupuncture needles are used to stimulate these meridian points and make the energy or qi flow again.

About 2500 years ago, China was already using acupuncture for the treatment of illnesses. Later, it spread to Japan and Korea. It was very much later during the 1700’s that a Jesuit priest brought it to Europe. However, it was only in the 1970’s, during President Nixon’s visit to China that acupuncture was ultimately introduced to the United States of America.

As we know, the blockages of chi or life energy along the meridians make us feel ill or less than well. To counter this, the acupuncture therapy uses the rebalancing of these energy points through stimulation of these points with needles. These needles are twirled or made to vibrate for some minutes up to an hour. Further, it is possible not to use needles in acupuncture. an additional form of stimulation is laser-acupuncture and the basic digitpuncture.

Acupuncture and Its Needles…

Very fine needles, about 1mm thick are used in acupuncture. The insertion depth is about 1cm. Sometimes, the practitioner will pass electricity through the needles to increase the effect of stimulation. This may be anywhere from 15 minutes or more. This will also help free up the 2 different kind of blockages – the excess qi or insufficient qi problems. Hence, leading to an even, just nice energy flow. Do note that the position of the needles are very precise for different health conditions.

Does Acupuncture Treatment Give Good Results?

Contrary to common belief – poking needles into the body is painful – strangely, most people do not feel any pain. It is in fact even a “feel good” feeling. Generally, the practitioner will stimulate a few meridian points at the same time for one particular ailment. And this may take 2 to 15 needles depending on needs.

Update: It has been said that acupuncture is helpful for patients who have irregular ovulation for females, and for males - blockages in the sperm ducts. This helps in infertility issues. For people with addictions like alcohol and smoking, it has proven effective too. Further, acupuncture has also helped in depression, migraine, arthritis, spinal problems, and other health challenges.

The Basis of Acupuncture

At the end of the day, acupuncture is about clearing blockages or imbalances of energy flow at key energy points or meridian points with the use of needles or laser. Some people have even used it for beauty, facial and skin care. While the basic premise is the same, really, really fine needles are used on the face to boost the collagen flow and blood flow. It can also help in the qi flow in our brain and spines. Do note that acupuncture is not a fast instant result treatment. Followups are required, and depending on the ailments – 2 to 10 times, or even up to 1 years’ treatment is necessary.

Is Acupuncture All Hype Only?

Some people may think that acupuncture does not work for them. The reason is because they actually feel worse after the treatment. The key is to persist with the treatment so that the full impact of the treatment can be felt. Most people will find acupuncture helpful thereafter.

It is also interesting to know that people have also used acupuncture for losing weight in addition to other illnesses like arthritis, migraine, depression and so on. Still, right at the very foundation or core of it all, acupuncture is about moving blocked energy in the body so that we stay healthy.
